About Scars

Scars are formed after the skin has been injured. As part of the natural wound healing process the body creates fibrous tissue that covers the wound. The scar tissue is made up of the same collagen protein as the tissue that it replaces, except that the fiber composition of the protein in a scar is different. In normal tissue the collagen is a random basketweave formation, whereas post injury it cross links, forming a pronounced alignment in a single direction. The new tissue is of lesser quality than the original tissue and cannot rejuvenate itself.

There are 4 types of scars:

  • Keloid scars are the result of a healing process that is overly aggressive and the scars that form are larger than the original injury.
  • Hypertrophic scars are raised and red scars that are similar to keloids, but do not breach the boundaries of the injury site.
  • Contracture scars occur as a result of burns. The burnt skin pulls on the edges of the skin making a tight area.
  • Acne scars are scars that form after active acne has ceased. There are several types of acne scars, ranging from deep pits to scars that are angular or wavelike in appearance.
