The color of our skin, or our pigmentation, is primarily determined by the quantity of a substance called melanin produced by our skin cells. The melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes that reside in the upper layer of the skin known as the epidermis layer. The amount of melanin produced varies from person to person- in light skinned individuals the amount of melanin is less than in dark skinned individuals.
